The book release celebration at Merritt College on October 15 was fantastic! Kudos to David Newton and the Newton family for its planning and execution! Besides a great turnout to honor the family and buy copies of Huey Newton’s Family: Roots of a Revolutionary Suicide signed by both me and Melvin Newton, it featured remarks by former Mayor, Assemblymember and Peralta Colleges Trustee Elihu Harris and a poem by 2023 Oakland Youth Poet Laureate Nairobi Barnes. It also included a 21-dove release and a showing of the trailer for the documentary American Justice on Trial (www.justicemovie.com) that became an Academy Award semi-finalist [recently renamed In the Crosshairs]. Attendees also feasted on a Southern down-home buffet.
